At Yogabean we believe the whole family should be able to enjoy yoga! That’s why we’re holding a family yoga event on Saturday the 22nd of October. The event will be held from 12-12.50pm at Radiant Sol Yoga (325 Bay St, Port Melbourne).

There are so many distractions in our digital age that we rarely have opportunities to come together as a family and truly take a moment to appreciate one another’s company. When was the last time you made time for family bonding? How do you manage to keep everyone interested? Our very own Alex Atkins will be leading the class. Alex has been practising yoga for over 10 years and can’t wait to salute to the sun with you all. Kicking Saturday off with yoga will help you to enjoy the rest of the weekend even more and allow you to slow down and be present for a moment. Alex is an expert in both kids yoga and adults yoga so the class will be designed to keep everyone engaged and interested.

Between work, meals, school, sports games, laundry, birthday parties and a seemingly endless list of other activities, it’s not unusual to feel a little disconnected. Yoga has been proven to be physically, mentally and emotionally beneficial for all ages.

Any healthy activity that families can do together away from their screen today is a blessing. For children, yoga is a perfect avenue to learn mindfulness skills which are important tools for living with a greater sense of happiness and peace.

Relax and enjoy each others company in a way that is much more engaging and interactive than sitting in front of a TV screen or staring down at our phones. The classes will be a combination of both challenging and fun and we will create an accepting and welcoming environment for all. Book in here for a great class followed by some healthy treats. See you there!

Why More Men Should Be Doing Yoga

kids yoga melbourne

1. Relieves Stress

We all need a way to manage perceived stress in our lives and sometimes going to gyms and aggressive workouts can make you more wound up or more tired and actually worsen it. Yoga however embraces a number of relaxation techniques, which can make you calmer overall. As well as training your body, yoga trains your mind, encouraging you to see the bigger picture instead of stressing out about small things. While you may have a busy week with a lot going on at work or at home, being forced to disconnect from emails, texts and calls for 60-90 minutes in a day can often be the time you need to calm down and see things with more clarity afterwards.

2. Strengthens Stabilizers

You’d be surprised how much longer a seemingly tiny yogi-woman can hold a pose compared to men who spend all day at the gym, or men with noticeably bigger muscles. This is because yoga helps you gain stabilizer muscles. Yoga includes many unique moves that are not typically present in weight lifting exercises such as lateral, twisting, and spinal-arch moves, as well as plenty of balance challenges. These force your body to work in different ways, strengthening stabilizer muscles. A good yoga class can cover a lot of the bases that you think you’re covering with your long, complicated gym routines.

3. Improves Breathing

While you might think you breath just fine, the practise of yoga teaches you to expand your lung capacity to take in the same or a greater amount of oygen from fewer inhalations. It teaches you to be conscious of your breath particularly while you hold tough poses, focusing on continual breathing throughout the practice. Essentially, yoga helps you train your body to oxyenate itself more efficiently which can also help for more intense cardio and strength workouts.

4. Enhances Overall Health

Working out at the gym or too much intense cardio can put a strain on your body and eventually result in wear and tear. You need to give your body time for quality rest. Yoga not only helps you feel good after other intense exercise, but it provides other health advantages. More efficient breathing helps reduce blood pressure and lowers the stress response and yoga has been shown to prevent or reduce problems associated with sciatica, carpal tunnel, or even rotator-cuff issues. Many people also report relief from injuries or ongoing back pain caused from sitting at a desk all day.

Yoga is a great way for you to live a longer active life. Begin at an appropriate level—and give it a go. Come along to the Father’s Day special yoga event on Saturday the 3rd of September. More details here.

Meet Yoga Bean Director – Alex Atkins

How long have you been practicing yoga?
I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years and love it more and more as I get older.

Where did you do your Teacher Training course?
I did my training in the beautiful landscape of Ubud in Bali with ‘Byron Yoga’. The experiencewas the best thing I have ever done and led me on a path to find my true passion.

What sparked your interest in teaching kids yoga?
I initially did my yoga teaching training with the desire to strengthen my own personal practice and then possibly teach adults.

However, when I was introduced to kids yoga shortly after the course, I knew straight away i wanted to teach children.

What effect do you find yoga has on young yogis? How do they respond?
Kids these days sometimes have more stress than adults and their brains are still developing. Stressors for children can lead to feelings of being unsettled and sometimes overwhelmed with their emotions. Children also often see things as black or white and I think yoga allows them to see the grey. Children start to see how their breathing calms them down and they begin to appreciate what their bodies can do. They develop an understanding about other childrens’ reactions and behaviours. Overall, yoga brings a greater understanding of themselves and others, emotionally, physically and mentally.
What is your favourite part of your job?
Seeing children and teens come to yoga, thinking it’s all about chanting and sitting in the lotus position and then leaving with a smile and a whole new perspective of their view on yoga. I also adore a child/teen having the opportunity to be calm, be still and have some quiet time – a place where there are no masks, no striving, they can simply just be.

What is your favourite yoga posture?
Love the nourishment of a good downward dog – gets me every time!

What advice do you have for any aspiring yogis?
Absolutely follow that desire to learn more and share with others. Yoga is such a beautiful gift to feel and share. If you know this is really what you want, things will fall into place and over time you can see the path you have been moving towards. There will always be challenges, but they are there to allow us to get clear on what we really want.
Can you share with us a favourite story from teaching kids yoga so far?
Just recently I had a year 6 boy come up to me and say  “I finally – found the piece that was missing in my life” –  yoga for him was a kind of sanctuary, a place that felt safe and nurturing and a new found resource to balance his life.

Winter Warmer Pumpkin Soup

What better way to warm yourself up this winter than with a hearty bowl of pumpkin soup?

It doesn’t have to involve 20 different fancy ingredients. We’ve brought it back to basics with this 5 ingredient recipe. Warm up those bodies with a bowl of home made deliciousness. Growing yogis need healthy ingredients to fuel their bodies, not of the nasties you get in a lot of store-bought soups.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 kg pumpkin (any), chopped into large chunks (remove skin and seeds)
  • 2 medium onions (sliced)
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 3 cups of chicken/vegetable stock
  • 1 cup milk (can substitute with soy/almond milk if needed)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
 What To Do
  1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to boil, then reduce heat and let simmer until pumpkin is tender.
  2. Take off heat and use a stick blender to blend until smooth. If you don’t have a stick blender, wait until it cools and put in regular blender.
  3. Season to taste with salt and pepper, then serve with crusty bread.

And that’s it!

You can always double the ingredients to have pumpkin soup all week for yourself and your little yogis.
